101 Dive Destinations Identified in Sabah, Malaysia

LOS ANGELES – Sipadan Island in Sabah is a world renowned diving destination, with great wall diving and drift dives, and guaranteed colorful fish encounters. However, the popularity of this "untouched piece of art," as Jacques Costeau once remarked, has overshadowed other equally fascinating dive sites in the area.

As many as 101 diving destinations have been identified by a scout team of avid divers who hope to bring greater attention to Sabah's other dive site jewels. Tourism Malaysia and Sabah Tourism Board are working together to promote these lesser known, but equally impressive dive sites in Sabah, such as Mantabuan Island, Layang-Layang Island, and Mantanani Island.

Mantabuan Island is a volcanically formed and mostly submerged island with magnificent coral and unsurpassed visibility. It is one of the best islands in the area to spot manta rays, eagle rays, and devil rays.

Layang-Layang Island is a ring of 13 coral atolls in the midst of the South China Sea. Divers can spot hammerhead sharks, which school in large numbers between March and July.

Mantanani Island consists of three small islands that offer unusual typography, plenty of bottom dwellers, an array of schooling fish, and occasional green turtles sightings. For more experienced divers, three Japanese World War II ships lie halfway between Mantanani and the mainland.

Malaysia is Southeast Asia's Most Multicultural Country, according to CNN.com

CNN.com recently described Malaysia as “Asia’s cultural melting pot.” The country is made up of a unique fusion of three of the continent’s oldest civilizations: Malay, Chinese and Indian, further enriched with the traditions of ethnic communities. “The rich mix of ethnicity, religions and historical influences is most vividly displayed in the nation's lively and animated culture,” according to CNN.

Multiculturalism has made Malaysia home to hundreds of colorful festivals, so much so that it is known as the Land of Festivals. The same blend can also be found in Malaysia’s diverse cuisine. CNN described the cuisine as “a smorgasbord of Asian flavors” that “will eventually become one of the world's most sought after.”

In addition, CNN stated that despite the global downtown, Malaysia remains “one of Asia’s most vibrant economies.” Gleaming skyscrapers dominate the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Among them are the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers, which are “the potent symbol of Malaysia’s development.” Lastly, CNN stated that National cuisine, exotic wildlife and colorful festivals make it a tourist favorite.”
